    • Come to the table
During Jesus’ ministry on earth, tables—and the meals shared around them—were an important part of his school of discipleship. Professor and author Robert Karris writes, “In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal or coming from a meal.” New Testament scholar N. T. Wright says, “When Jesus himself wanted to explain to his disciples what his forthcoming death was all about, he didn’t give them a theory, he gave them a meal.” When Jesus invites his followers to the table, the meal is open to all—men and women, slave and free, Jew and Greek. Jesus’ […]
    • Why our lenses matter
Every human sees the world through their own unique and distinct cultural lens. But what does that mean? What is a cultural lens and how does that affect how we interact with our neighbors and our brothers and sisters in the faith? How do I know what my own cultural lens is and how it differs from others? How can we as a USMB family seek to understand each other better when our cultural lenses are very different? There is a significant cue in what John encounters in Revelation 7 and the implications that come out of it. After John […]
    • Pastor focuses on church planting, leadership development
With 30 churches and almost 10,000 members in three countries, Grace Tabernacle Ministries (GTM) has grown significantly since its humble beginning in Kenya with seven Congolese refugees in 2009. Founding pastor Emmanuel Musinga, who now pastors in Indianapolis, Indiana, borrowed $300 from a former primary school teacher to build a roof for the fledgling church. “The Bible says, ‘Don’t despise the small beginnings,’” Musinga says. “Just listen to the voice of God, and follow the passion that God has given to you.” Musinga’s passion is for church planting, leadership development and children’s education, and today, the church he founded has […]

    • Disciple-Making
      •
USMB is actively involved in helping provide our churches with dynamic ideas, resources and programs for encouraging people to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus. • Leadership Development
      •
USMB’s leadership development strategy stems from the real need to actively develop more leaders within the local church who are living on mission in the workplace and in their communities and to fulfill the demand for additional pastors, church planters and missionaries. • Church Multiplication
      •
Church planting continues to be a crucial area of ministry for USMB. Studies show churches are the most effective way to bring more people into the family of God. Partnering with local churches, districts, USMB and Multiply to plant churches, is not just a good thing to do, we must do it.Read More

FPU offers Psalms Course in 2021

January 12, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm

  • « Book Discussion: the Myth of Equality
  • Webinar: Help for Churches Experiencing Mental Health, Trauma, and Anxiety »

You are invited to a virtual study of the book of Psalms with Lynn Jost, Professor of Old Testament at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, in Spring 2021.

“We and our communities are facing times of nearly unprecedented uncertainty,” Jost says. “I have found this to be taxing for my own spiritual life, for energy to do my work well, and for connecting at a deep level with people from my faith community. I believe the book of Psalms is uniquely suited for addressing and empowering ministry in times like this. I hope you will join me and Tim Sullivan and other learners in the study of the Psalms. Credit is available. Auditing is welcome.”

This course is a study of the book of Psalms with attention to literary analysis, the use of the Psalter as a text of study and inspiration for the church and a guide to personal and corporate prayer.

The course will pursue three major agendas:

  • As a graduate course in biblical studies, this course will address literary issues and critical questions. Students will engage scholarly work to explore the psalms as classical scriptural literature.
  • As a practical course for pastors and teachers, the course will give opportunity to develop skills in preaching and teaching the scriptures to congregational gatherings.
  • As a seminary course for believers in need of a growing relationship with God, the course invites participants to use the psalms for personal and corporate prayer.

The course will meet via Zoom on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. PST (1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST) beginning Jan. 12, 2021, through May 4, 2021. It is available for 1, 2 or 3 units of credit or as an audit. Click here to view the course syllabus.

The audit fee is $110 per unit and will be waived for all MB pastoral staff. Those interested in auditing the course should fill out this application form and submit to Jost via email.

Send an email to Lynn Jost for more information.
