Celebration 2010 (Bi-national 150th Celebration)

A sesquicentennial (150th) event is a rare opportunity. The celebration of 150 years of Mennonite Brethren ministries and mission provided a great opportunity to honor the Lord of the church and make some great family memories. Celebration 2010 was a God-honoring gathering which included Canadian and United States national conventions, and bi-national rallies with a significant global presence.

The 2010 Bi-National Biennial Gathering was held in Vancouver, British Colombia July 12-18, 2010.

The theme for the event was Renewing Identity and Mission: a Mennonite Brethren Consultation.

Renewing Identity & Mission: a Mennonite Brethren Consultation opened Celebration 2010. The evening plenary sessions, featuring Alfred Neufeld from Paraguay and a panel of international guests, provided a global perspective on Mennonite Brethren identity and mission. During the two days, more than 30 presenters addressed significant issues facing Mennonite Brethren in North America. Participants experienced a rich time of reflection and conversation, along with the challenge to be God’s missional people in the world.

Three international speakers included:

  • Nzuzi Mukawa, an academic dean and professor at the School of Missiology in Kinshasa, DR Congo, and associate pastor of Batela Mennonite Brethren Church of Kinshasa. He was born and raised in a Mennonite Brethren family and church in Kinshasa. Mukawa’s passion is to “see the Anabaptist family united, sharing resources to fulfill the Great Commission by reaching the unreached of the world.”
  • John Shankar Rao is the director of evangelism and church planting within the India MB Conference. He will bring us a fresh word on mission as he serves the largest mission field in the world. India has 4,000 people groups who have never heard the name of Jesus Christ.
  • Samir Youssef serves Arabic-speaking communities in North America and beyond through radio, television and printed materials. He is known as the “Billy Graham” of North Africa. MBMSI (now known as MB Mission) helped Youssef launch his media ministries. He is committed to a peaceful witness to Muslims.
